South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier retiring
According to The State, an interim coach will be named Tuesday. He also was the SEC Coach of Year as the leader of the Gamecocks in 2005 and 2010, and South Carolina has won a bowl game in each of the last four seasons under Spurrier.

For starters, LSU still hasn’t solidified a kickoff man, using both junior placekicker Trent Domingue and sophomore placekicker Cameron Gamble on Saturday against the University of South Carolina. “I plan on coaching a long time”, he said matter-of-factly. He also won the ACC Coach of the Year award in 1988 and 1989.
Amidst a couple of down years, many specualted that Spurrier might hang it up after this year. Spurrier led the Gators to the national championship after the 1996 season and nine double-digit win seasons.
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is set to retire.
He was successful at UF despite taking over a program marred in an NCAA investigation, bringing the Gators their first officially recognized SEC Championship in 1991. Prior to that, Spurrier coached in the United States Football League from 1983-85 and led the Tampa Bay Bandits to a 35-19 record.
The Gamecocks are 2-4 (0-4 SEC) to start 2015.
“If a player says he can’t play, then obviously he can’t play”, Spurrier added Sunday. He won UF’s first Heisman Trophy in 1966 when he threw for 2,012 yards and 16 touchdowns. It didn’t take Spurrier to build Florida into a powerhouse and arguably the best team in college football during his tenure from 1990-2011. In fact the Gamecocks have lost considerable ground on the recruiting trail in recent years – with Spurrier shouldering his fair share of the blame.

Spurrier would finishes his career with a collegiate record of 228-89-2. He left college football to coach the NFL’s Washington Redskins but went 12-20 in two seasons before returning to the SEC at South Carolina.
