Jets top Devils for second road win

Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler each had a goal and an assist in a big second period and the Winnipeg Jets beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 on Friday night to spoil John Hynes’ National Hockey League coaching debut. Burmistrov’s return to Winnipeg after spending two seasons in his native Russian Federation was a successful one, as he finished the victory over the Bruins with a plus-4 rating in addition to his two points. Only minutes later Wheeler also raced in, and also tucked it under the bar to put the Jets ahead by two. “I think there’s a lot of potential to move up, but we’re making significant strides off a relatively low base”.

Scheifele and Wheeler have scored in both games, and coach Paul Maurice feels the former is coming into his own.

“So, you have a progression of things getting better”.

“We’re sort of building off a low base and the reality is, two years ago when we got here, the roof was leaking and the banks were on the doorstep of the company”, Harris said. “He is. He’s getting it off his stick as fast as I’ve ever seen and that seems to be translating to a few breaks”.

Ladd led the way for the Jets.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (2014-15: 32-36-14, 7TH IN METROPOLITAN): Palmieri figures to be Shero’s most important acquisition, as he is expected to improve upon his career high-tying 14 goals with Anaheim last season and help a club that ranked 28th in tallies in 2014-15. Tlusty played 20 games with the Jets last season and all four of their playoff games after being acquired in a trade from Carolina in February.

There are seven new players on the Devils’ roster on opening night.

The Jets get the weekened off in New York as the 4 game season opening road trip continues Monday night against the Islanders.

Cal Clutterbuck’s short-handed goal with just over a minute remaining was all the offense the Islanders produced Saturday.

“We shot the puck early, we were grinding it out and all of a sudden we got away from it and turned pucks over”, coach Jack Capuano said. We played the way we wanted to play, had a lot of pressure and were skating and had a few sustained shifts in the offensive zone.

The Islanders have thus far been without starting goaltender Jaroslav Halak as he nurses an upper-body injury. Islanders G Thomas Greiss, who allowed three goals on 35 shots in the season opener, will start if Halak is unable to play.3.
