“It wasn’t very long ago that I stood in close proximity to where I’m standing now and said something very similar to what I am saying”, Mr Armstrong told a news conference.

Olridge was rushed to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.

In past shootings, Armstrong has addressed the media outside the Regional Medical Center. As of Monday morning, the suspect had not been charged with any crime.

The officer was identified as 31-year-old Terence Olridge. He was assigned to Airways Station after graduating from MPD’s 118th recruiting class.

Terence Olridge joined the department in September 2014 and had a fiancée who is four months pregnant. “His mother is here”. At the time of the shooting, he was on his way to work. “I didn’t think that we’d be here again so soon”.

Olridge is one of four Memphis officers have been shot to death in just over four years and the second fatally shot in the past 2.5 months. Timothy Warren was killed in 2011; Martoiya Lang was killed in 2012; Sean Bolton was killed in August 2015.

After the shooting, teddy bears and flowers piled up outside Olridge’s home.

“Today, the collective heart of the city is broken”.

Olridge was an expectant father.

“We are keeping his family and his fellow officers with the Memphis Police Department in our thoughts and prayers”. Neighbors reported hearing as many as 15 gunshots, according to WMC. Olridge was found in the driveway of his own home, the newspaper said.
