Brown signed into law Senate Bill 707, which prohibits gun owners who are legal hide carry owners from carrying handguns for self-defense onto California school grounds. “Although lawmakers approved two major planks of the governor’s agenda for battling climate alter – increasing renewable energy and energy efficiency – they refused to endorse his goal of slashing Californians” gasoline use.In addition, his efforts to fix the state’s deteriorating roads and safeguard publicly paid healthcare with new taxes sputtered.

The term redskins, which is used by a National Football League team based in Maryland, is considered by many as offensive to Native Americans. The National Congress of Native Americans thanked California legislators for “standing on the right side of history by bringing an end to the use of the demeaning and damaging R-word slur in the state’s schools”. The team’s owner, Dan Snyder, is persistent in his refusal to change the name.

Only four schools in California still have teams or mascots called the Redskins. The changes for all schools must be made by January 1, 2017.

“The most populous state in the country has now taken a stand against the use of this insidious slur in its schools, and Change the Mascot expects more states to follow”.

The formal recognition will give cheerleading the respect and safety standards that athletes deserve, said Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez of San Diego, who introduced the bill. “I’m not offended by it”, Seals said.

Brown also signed into law a ban on professional baseball players from using chewing tobacco on MLB fields and he legalized the use of electronic skateboards.

Considering the limitations, such as background checks, imposed on CCW license holders in California, UC Berkeley junior and Berkeley College Republicans President Kerida Moates said removing CCWs from university campuses doesn’t do anything to enforce the safety of the students – it just increases their feelings of security.

It’s believed to affect only four public schools using the mascot. “The expansion provided in this bill, however, creates a disparity between California’s law and the Federal Medical Leave Act and, in certain circumstances, would require employers to provide employees up to 24 weeks of family leave in a 12-month period”. That includes schools in Houston, Oklahoma City, and Cooperstown, New York; the group says around 20 others are considering eliminating Native American references.
