The patient, 35, was re-admitted to Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) on Sunday (Oct 11) with a high fever, an official from the Health and Welfare Ministry revealed.

The MERS outbreak began in South Korea in May, and killed 36 people. He was discharged from hospital after testing negative for the viral infection in two earlier tests early this month. However, the chance of them being infected by the virus from the particular patient is “very low”, according to medical professionals and the government.

A patient who was thought to have completely recovered from the MERS outbreak was recently re-diagnosed with the virus.

Thirty three percent of a total of 1,252 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus cases reported over the past four years in Saudi Arabia took place within hospitals, a media report said on Saturday.

There is now no approved vaccine for MERS.
