Videos of Palestinians stabbing Israelis or calling for such attacks as well as footage of rioters throwing stones at Israeli soldiers have been shared on the Internet.

No group has claimed responsibility for launching the rockets, one of which was intercepted near the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon.

The violence began on October 1, when an alleged Hamas cell shot dead a Jewish settler couple in the West Bank in front of their children. Rocket fire has been infrequent since the summer war of 2014 but the rising Palestinian death toll in border clashes of recent days has tested the fragile calm in the coastal enclave.

The woman suffered burns to 40 per cent of her body, Jerusalem’s Hadassah hospital said, and the officer also was hurt.

Also on Sunday a Palestinian bomber bound for Jerusalem was severely injured when she detonated a gas canister after being stopped by a traffic officer near a West Bank checkpoint.

A spokesman for the prime minister said the mobilization of 13 companies, in addition to three mobilized last week, was a “primary preventive and deterrent measure”.

The European Union’s top diplomat, foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, told Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in phone calls Sunday evening to avoid action that could increase tensions, and called on both sides to agree on “substantial steps which would improve the situation on the ground” and lead to renewed peace talks, according to an EU statement.

In Jerusalem, an Israeli policeman was stabbed and lightly injured near the Lion’s Gate entrance to the Old City, with the attacker shot and killed. Burning tires are being rolled, rubber bullets are being fired, and Molotov cocktails are being thrown in the fiery Israeli and Palestinian violence.

“We foiled a vehicle bomb attack”, Rafi Cohen, a police commander, told reporters at the scene.

Now, violent confrontations are taking place across Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, and shopkeepers in Israel say gun and pepper spray sales are up.

The incident on Monday morning followed a weekend of spiralling violence across Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Israeli bulldozers have reportedly removed large objects in the area to remove cover for Palestinian protesters.

“He said that Fadi Aloun was killed in cold blood”, he said, referring to a Palestinian shot by Israeli police on 3 October for what Palestinians believe was no reason.

The group – the Islamic Movement – earlier this year encouraged Palestinian citizens of Israel not to vote in the general election.

Mr Netanyahu quoted Ms Zoabi as saying to a Hamas newspaper that “hundreds of thousands of worshippers should go to the Al-Aksa Mosque to stand up against Israel’s conspiracy to condone violence against east Jerusalem residents”.

According to initial reports, the assailant was walking down the street with his hand in his pocket, raising the suspicions of the Border Police, who asked him to stop for a security check.
