The group is again nominated for Artist of the Year after a tumultuous year in which founding member Zayn Malik quit.
Joe Jonas and Charlie Puth have announced the nominees for this year’s American Music Awards.
Tied with four nods are Meghan Trainor, the “All About That Bass” singer who has challenged traditional notions of slender appearance among women in pop, and Sam Smith, the English soul singer who was the big victor at this year’s Grammys. Whitney Houston’s 22 awards are the most ever among female artists in the show, which was launched in 1974. Both had songs in the song of the year category: The Weeknd with “Can’t Feel My Face” and Sheeran with “Thinking Out Loud”.
Swift, Sheeran, the Weeknd, Minaj, Trainor, Smith, Luke Bryan, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5 and One Direction are artist of the year nominees.
The American Music Award nominations are based on fan interaction as reflected on Billboard magazine and its website, including album and digital sales, touring, radio airplay, social media and touring. Fans decide the winners in all categories, either by voting at AMAvote.com, posting on Facebook with the artist’s name and a hashtag for the category or posting the artist’s name, the category and #AMAs on Twitter.
Fan voting opened online on Tuesday and the 10 artist of the year nominees will be narrowed to five based on votes received by November 11. In the album category, Swift’s 1989 will do battle with Sheeran’s X and Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour.
All three singers are also up for the Artist of the Year category.
