A game after recording a career-high. “Once we get into a rhythm on offense, we’re hard to stop”. Just when you thought the Bruins were going to have one of the best seasons in school history along comes a bump in the road. We have to own it, starting with me, our staff and our players. “I would say the last two games we’ve executed very well”.
As part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities against the Beavers, Cougar football is going Back to the Future, as Marty McFly and Doc Brown set the DeLorean for October 2015, in the hit movie. That doesn’t even bring to light the success that Arizona and Arizona State have found in the past few years with their new head coaches.
The tempo of the match was speeding up, with both teams looking to try to score the game-winning goal to prevent spending any more time underneath the hot Berkeley Sunday.
In its semifinal matchup, the Cardinal faced USC for the third time in less than a month. Stanford is led by its 6-4, 218 pound fifth year senior quarterback Kevin Hogan. California’s series advantage in all locations is 21-4-1.
The score was closer than it should have been, as Stanford had 22 shots on goal.
Stanford junior goalie Drew Holland had 10 saves in the cage against USC.
In the first of the team’s two top-20 matchups, both teams played excellent soccer, and neither side conceded a goal as the game ended in a scoreless draw after double overtime.
Cal scored four of the game’s first five goals with sophomore Cody Smith providing the Cardinal’s lone goal during the span. The Cardinal continued to chip away at Cal’s lead the rest of the period, with two of the quarter’s final three scores. Stanford added goals from Brandon Vincent and Foster Langsdorf in the second half. Oregon has now suffered three losses this season, including two at home.
The Beavers are at Washington next Sunday.
With 10 goals in four games in the Kap7 SoCal Invitational, Bonanni is 11 goals shy of tying Tony Azevedo’s Stanford and MPSF record of 332 from 2001-04. That was the second most saves she has made this season in a single game. Arizona’s last win at UCLA was a sweep in 2011. It’s a large disparity, particularly since Stanford have a 19-8 record over two seasons, compared to the Bruins’ 20-6 record. Second on the team in kps (3.18), she has at least eight kills in 13 of 16 contests… redshirt junior Haley Lawless has at least five kills in 11 consecutive matches, averaging 2.67 kills per set during that stretch.
The Cardinal returns to action Friday, traveling to Stockton for an America East contest with Pacific.
