With the loss, Klinsmann’s squad has now lost three straight games dating back to a September 8 friendly defeat at the hands of Brazil.

Along with Johnson, Klinsmann also sent home another seven players from the squad that featured against Mexico and called up five new players in order to ensure that he gets a fresh look at several untested players against Costa Rica.

Goalkeeper Bill Hamid, midfielders Mix Diskerud, Lee Nguyen and Brek Shea and forward Andrew Wooten have all joined the team in the meantime and Klinsmann is hoping to see them push for more prominent roles in his long-term plans against Costa Rica.

Up-and-coming super-sub Bobby Wood, who scored the extra-time equalizer versus Mexico, came on at halftime for Jozy Altidore, and Geoff Cameron was substituted for Ventura Alvarado at the break as well.

Costa Rica broke through in the 70th minute when they got free down the right and dragged the ball back for an unmarked Campbell.

Ream was a strong presence for the States in an unsteady half, and his late cross for DeAndre Yedlin was mishit on goal. Daniel Colindres fired on goal from close range, but Evans knocked the shot away to keep the score 1-0.
