Reid’s swipe at N.H., Iowa triggers uproar

Iowa and New Hampshire are often criticized for not being as diverse as the rest of the nation.

Reid complained to reporters ahead of the first televised Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas that he’s always been “terribly upset” at how America picks its presidents.

“We are a state that is representative of what America is all about”, he said.

The ex-reality TV host noted he did not think any of the debaters were delivering a breakout performance.

“You go to New Hampshire – there aren’t any minorities there; nobody lives there”, Reid said, as reported by National Review.

A political action committee associated with Reid, the Senate Majority PAC, was supportive of the notion of Hassan running for the U.S. Senate prior to her decision to do so last week.

Nevada, land of casinos and legal prostitution, “demonstrates what America is all about” more than the first-in-the-nation primary state, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said Monday night.

“New Hampshire is heavily populated and loaded with a lot of minorities, my apologies”, Reid said. He said Nevada’s primary should be moved up because it better reflects the United States than Hassan’s state.

Reid is retiring from the Senate at the end of his term in 2016.

The Des Moines Register cornered him after the news conference and asked him to explain what his feelings are about Iowa, which holds the first-in-the-nation vote in the presidential nominating contests, just before New Hampshire’s lead-off primary.

“And clearly he hasn’t been to New Hampshire”, she said, according to New Hampshire Public Radio. He said that during the process of coming up with delegate selection rules for 2020, no state will get special treatment.

And he doesn’t care if those remarks have early staters in a tizzy. “But I don’t think anyone should get too comfortable”.

Maggie Hassan is calling on Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to apologize for saying New Hampshire shouldn’t have a big role in picking the presidential nominees because it has few minorities. “And last time I checked, the NHGOP still hadn’t renounced it’s membership in the RNC following Priebus’ vow to destroy our primary”.
