Palestinians escalated the pace of stabbing attacks in the Jerusalem area on Monday and Israeli police shot dead two of the alleged assailants in the worst spell of street violence for years.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the attacker was shot and killed.

The woman was pulled over near a West Bank checkpoint after she was spotted driving suspiciously at about 7 a.m., according to the Israeli Security Agency, saying that she deliberately ignited a gas canister as the officer was speaking to her. The man was subsequently shot dead by police in the vicinity.

There have been warnings of the risk of a full-scale Palestinian uprising, or third intifada.

As the officers approached him, the man, a Palestinian, took out a knife and stabbed one of them in his flak jacket, Samri said.

The airstrike comes the same day a 20-year-old Arab Israeli is reported to have ran his auto into a female soldier and stabbed three Israelis near Hadera.

Videos of Palestinians stabbing Israelis or calling for such attacks as well as footage of rioters throwing stones at Israeli soldiers have been shared on the Internet.

The wave of attacks began weeks ago in Jerusalem and has since spread across Israel, while violent protests have erupted in the West Bank and along the Gaza border – where nine Palestinians, including two children, were killed in clashes over the weekend.

During his initial interrogation, Raed Zyud said he crashed into the bus stop by accident, and that he took out the knife to protect himself from passersby who sought to attack him.

Four Israelis died in militant attacks this week, as stabbing attacks became a daily occurrence throughout Israel in the past several days.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under heavy criticism for failing to stop the violence, and an opinion poll this week showed that more than 70 percent of the public is dissatisfied with his handling of the crisis. He said four others were wounded, included Ms Hassan’s husband and son, in the strike in the southern Gaza strip. Border police responded by shooting and killing the man, she said without providing details on his identity. The account was disputed by a Palestinian passerby, who said he witnessed the incident and saw no knife.

Jewish and Muslim grassroots groups, self-declared defenders of their faiths, have played a key role in rising Israeli-Palestinian tensions, stepping up activities at a contested Jerusalem shrine at the heart of the current violence.
