Kershaw, Dodgers top Mets 3-1, force NLDS to decisive Game 5
On Monday’s “Pardon the Interruption” on ESPN, co-host Mike Wilbon reacted to Major League Baseball’s handling of Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley’s suspension and appeal from his part in a slide over the weekend against the New York Mets deemed dirty by MLB, who suspended Utley for two games.

Working on only three days’ rest, Kershaw shut down the Mets for seven innings and Justin Turner delivered a key hit against his former team.
Granderson had a total of 5 RBI on the night. When someone questioned what went through the southpaw’s mind when Cespedes led off the frame with an infield single, Kershaw responded, “That’s really the first question I’m answering?” per Shaikin. “We tried to do the best we could….”
It might well be remembered as the coming out party of the young, slugging Chicago Cubs, and the New York Mets with their array of precocious power pitchers.
With two outs and a runner at first, Matz surrendered a single on a 1-2 pitch to Howie Kendrick to bring up Adrian Gonzalez. The left-hander was handed a loss in Game 1 after he allowed three earned runs on four hits and four walks over 6 1/3 innings. Three-time Cy Young Award victor Clayton Kershaw started for them Tuesday night opposite the rookie Matz. I mean, this kid is tremendous.
After the Mets clinched the NL East title, Reynolds was one of the players sent to the team’s facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, to play in instructional league games and stay sharp. Harvey started Game 3 because he could only make one start this round.
NEW YORK (AP) – Matt Reynolds was home in Oklahoma just a few weeks ago, his minor league season complete.
“There’s no curse or anything”, he said.
New York was surely disappointed it failed to get to Kershaw in the seventh or throughout the game, but it must now turn its attention to Game 5. Fans rose to their feet, sensing a chance to take advantage of the Dodgers’ weak bullpen, but Daniel Murphy popped out to right field to end the threat.
In Game 4, Kershaw was nails. But the one rule that trumps all others can be summed up with late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis’ famous catchphrase: Just win, baby.
“You don’t really feel exhausted or anything like that”, Kershaw said.
After a breezy first, the trouble started in a second inning during which Harvey gave up four straight singles. To sharpen up, he threw approximately 90 pitches during a simulated game Thursday in Florida and worked off the main mound at Citi Field on Sunday. Still, he looked sharp early and snapped off several effective curveballs. He has hit safely in 15 of 16 career playoff games.
“He played at Philly”, Mattingly said. “We didn’t get a lot of good swings”.
Matz grew up a Mets fan on Long Island, about 50 miles from Citi Field, and his family attended the game.
Kershaw’s start, of course, will be seen through the prism of his past playoff failures – and they are many, including his loss in Game 1 of this series.
“I think the boos at the introductions were kind of a big statement leading into the game”, winning pitcher Matt Harvey said afterward.
Cueto will get the start in Game 5 for the Royals against the Astros. Katz did just that through two innings, but the Dodgers struck in the top of the third. He was 19-3 with a 1.66 ERA this season, the lowest in the majors since Atlanta ace Greg Maddux posted a 1.63 mark in 1995.
