Clinton calls for breaking up too-big-to-fail banks
Battling the Trans-Pacific Partnership, as the pending agreement is known, has been a top priority for progressives.

Then in June, she broke with the administration on that, saying she was standing with House Democrats who were opposing Obama’s trade agenda. She said it would protect “the integrity of our markets and uphold basic fairness”.
“I also think that there’s a difference between running for president and being president”, Obama told reporters this month after Clinton broke with him over Syria.
In the first major economic speech of her presidential campaign, last July in New York City, Clinton expressed outrage at accounts of money laundering and currency manipulation involving several major financial firms.
“Now, we’ve seen how bilateral trade benefits both sides”. She toured the world on her boss’s behalf selling the Trans-Pacific Partnership he championed. But she was always careful to say that the deal needed to be negotiated properly. What’s emerged from the talks suggests that the TPP will indeed live up to Obama’s promise of a “21st-century” agreement: one that anchors the United States in a key region for decades to come, while increasing the scope of trade policy beyond just tariffs.
On Tuesday, Clinton said she would go after “not the problems of the past, but the problems of today”, a subtle knock against two of her stoutest Democratic opponents: Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.
Even though the TPP will not come into force in the short-term, China can not afford to ignore this new powerful force in worldwide trade, said Zhang Lei, dean of the School of WTO Research and Education at the Shanghai University of global Business and Economics.
“The only thing Hillary Clinton is interested in reining in is Bernie Sanders’ momentum”, Republican National Committee spokesperson Michael Short said in a statement. “The risks are too high that, despite our best efforts, they will end up doing more harm than good“. There were also concerns that the proposals could be expanded. The anecdotal accounts of those sector losses have driven opposition to trade deals among unions and many Democrats.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership trade accord has enraged the labour unions, environmentalists and other liberal constituencies whose support is crucial in the Democratic primary contest. This TPP sets the gold standard in trade agreements to open free, transparent, fair trade, the kind of environment that has the rule of law and a level playing field.
Clinton hasn’t taken any direct swipes at Obama when it comes to his governing style, but she has made subtle attempts to cast herself as someone who may be a more effective fighter. We can also cite economists we have a few disagreements with, such as Charles R. Morris, who points out through his research that wages tend to fall under free trade – unless the trading partner is a developed country.
“The president has been extraordinarily effective in making as strong a case as could be made, but I do worry we have an equation here, how do we raise incomes in America?” I, along with other members of the Cabinet, pushed hard to get a better agreement.

My own inclination is to back the treaty until given good reason otherwise, which will mean taking a closer look once its details are released and listening to the subsequent debate.
