Kickstarter Campaign Goes live For BLOCKS Modular Smartwatch
In the first hours on Kickstarter, the company blasted through that funding goal – currently, more than 925 backers have submitted more than $250,000 in pledges, and there are 37 days left in the campaign. You can order an unlimited number of modules, and redeem your credit from Kickstarter at any date to purchase modules that are released in the future.

The Blocks smartwatch brings to mind Google’s Project Ara, which provides users with individual modules to build a custom smartphone, and taps into the growing do-it-yourself mindset. The BLOCKS Core features a round 1.35-inch 360×360 touchscreen, Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a microphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 400mAh battery.
Among the module options include an extra battery that extends the charge life by 20%, GPS, NFC payments, advanced health tracking features, a SIM card, a camera module, and the list goes on. The entire setup is also hot swappable, meaning you can switch one piece for another without turning Blocks off entirely. Developers will also have the ability to build new and exciting modules.
The Blocks watches will be compatible with both iPhones and Android smartphones, working with iOS 8 and above on iPhone 4S and above.
Blocks Wearables says it has partnered with “major tech companies” to develop more modules, and that a software development kit for the Blocks watch will be available soon. For $195, you can get a BLOCKS core and a strap.

Expect the Blocks smartwatch to ship in May 2016. It’s also able, without the addition of specific modules, to do things like push phone notifications and act as an activity tracker. No matter how enticing the BLOCKS and its modules are, though, perhaps the most important aspect of the device is how it feels to wear it. Because its on Kickstarter, you can’t actually try a BLOCKS on to see how its modules feel on your wrist before buying one, so interested parties will just have to pull the trigger and hope that BLOCKS is comfortable.
