Met Gala Reveals Its Futuristic Theme for 2016: Technology Vs. Fashion

This year she was just a guest in the Met Gala, but next year she will be the host.

Anna Wintour reportedly banned selfies from this past May’s Met Gala, but for 2016, she’s embracing technology wholeheartedly.

The theme of the night – taking place on May 2 – is Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.

It appears the Met Gala’s theme will be a lot less controversial than 2015’s, where cultural appropriation was pervasive with nearly every other look.

Apple is helping fund the exhibition, which “will explore the impact of new technology on fashion and how designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear”, according to a press release. The theme chosen for the gala each year reflects the theme of the Costume Institute exhibition and dictates what Met Gala attendees should wear. 3-D printed, laser-cut, thermo-shaped, and circular knit garments will be among those shown-and likely worn by the stars. Reportedly, honorary chairs will also include industry icons Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada in case we were bored of the already A-list line up.

“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made”, explains Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute.
