BBC to lose The Voice to ITV?

As the Guardian reported, the BBC is expected to hang on to The Voice and is “thought to be close to agreeing a new deal to extend the show by up to three years when its current contract runs out after next year’s fifth series”.

The BBC will reportedly announce they have secured the rights to air talent show The Voice for another three years.

Buried amid all the excitement of the new series of The Voice United Kingdom, which has started its audition process, there’s been a whole spinning chair full of confusion, with claims that the show could be cut from the BBC after the next series.

This statement follows suggestions the BBC were not looking to renew the show’s contract over its £55 million cost.

Whittingdale targeted the popular singing show when he claimed that the BBC had wasted licence payers’ money competing with ITV for the show, which stars Paloma Faith, Will.i.am, Boy George and Ricky Wilson.

But now the Daily Mirror has completely backtracked on its story from last night and said the show will STAY on the BBC.

Another insider added: “The BBC has had no choice but to walk away”.

“I believe that we should keep fighting for entertainment on Saturday nights on the BBC that reaches a wide range of people up and down the country, from all different sorts of backgrounds”, he said. It had also offered to work on spin-offs of the show – which regularly attracts eight million viewers – including a version for children. “Is that a good use of the licence payers’ money?”

Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has questioned whether such shows are “distinctive” enough from those aired by commercial rivals. He’s an avid Big Brother viewer, and loves Pic n Mix.
