Jurgen Klopp has been dealt the first blow of his Liverpool tenure with the news that Joe Gomez is expected to miss the rest of the season with a suspected cruciate injury.

The talented 18-year-old defender hurt his right knee in the closing stages of England Under-21s’ 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan at Coventry City on Tuesday night.

Gomez has had a whirlwind campaign since moving from Championship side Charlton Athletic in the summer to join Liverpool.

Gomez received treatment on the pitch before limping off and being replaced by Dominic Iorfa on 80 minutes, which left onlooking Liverpool fans thinking the worst.

Klopp was able to cast his eye over all of the Liverpool players he has inherited from Rodgers for the first time yesterday after everyone else reported back from worldwide duty in rude health.

Gomez had a scan at Spire Hospital and was assessed at Melwood on Wednesday.

The club have not confirmed the extent of Gomez’s knee injury, but several United Kingdom media outlets report that he will require ACL surgery, putting him on the sidelines for between six and nine months.

Klopp takes charge of his first Liverpool match at Tottenham on Saturday.
