Modi, an admirer of Netaji like many in India, wanted to brush aside the bureaucracy’s objection over de-classifying the files, which his BJP predecessor Atal Behari Vajpayee failed to do despite his promise and wish.

Chandra Kumar Bose, the grand-nephew of Netaji, who was part of the family delegation which met Modi, said politics was played over the files but now facts would come out after the PM’s direction.

“The process of declassification of files relating to Netaji will begin on 23rd January, 2016, Subhas Babus birth anniversary, ” Modi tweeted after an hour-long interaction with the family members who sought making public of the documents with the hope that questions about his mysterious disappearance seven decades back could be answered.

“Will also request foreign Governments to declassify files on Netaji available with them”.

During the meeting with PM, the oldest members of the family expressed their views after which Modi addressed them.

“There is no need to strangle history”. He added that he would not only write to foreign governments to declassify the Bose files but also take up the matter personally on his trips to these nations.

“But the bigger happiness is for me as nobody in the Prime Minister’s residence would have got such a chance earlier as I will be getting in October”, he had said in that programme. He has already given the date for declassification, which is January 23, 2016. “Finally, there’s hope that the veil over Netaji’s dying shall be eliminated, because the PM himself has assured us”, stated one other relative Arya Bose stated.

Yet the files declassified by the Mamata Banerjee government reveal that he was presumed dead in the air crash in 1945.

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, and Babul Supriyo were present on the occasion.

Recalling his meeting with a few members of the family in Kolkata in May, PM Modi had said, “I got an opportunity to spend a few time with them”.

However he also said, “We are welcoming it. We are very happy with it. Congress has been repeating for last several months that instead of declassifying it tomorrow, declassify it today”.
