University of Maryland President Speaks To Baltimore Sun About New Football Coach

“I think ultimately when you recruit the right kind of guys and we have the right kind of guys in our program, we’re all competitive, we’re all prideful and I think that we’ll rally this thing together”, Locksley said.

“As we grow in whatever endeavor we’re involved in, I think that you learn certain things, and you know what to ask and what not to ask”, Anderson said. Locksley and Anderson spoke to Maryland’s players on Sunday, and the healing starts immediately.

Among those who have been mentioned as potential successors to Edsall are current head coaches Matt Rhule of Temple, Tom Herman of Houston, Justin Fuente of Memphis, and Matt Campbell of Toledo. He was a running backs coach at Maryland and also served as a recruiting coordinator.

For now, Locksley’s focus is on the next seven weeks and the next six games, starting with a matchup with Penn State in Baltimore on October 24. “Mike has previous head coaching experience and is well-respected both locally and nationally”. He accepted the job after going 74-70 in 12 years at Connecticut. The move was expected following a report last week that the school planned on letting Edsall go following the Ohio State game.

Following two more defeats – blowout losses at West Virginia and at home to Michigan by a combined 73-6 – Anderson met with Edsall and his coaching staff. After the second meeting with the coaches, Anderson didn’t have confidence that things would improve, according to another source.

Last June, Edsall received a contract extension that was to begin in January 2017 and was worth up to $7.5 million – though only $500,000 was guaranteed.

As part of Anderson’s aim to invigorate Maryland fans, he said he’d be looking for an open, fun-to-watch offense.

Randy Edsall gave Maryland football fans a few things to be happy about during his tenure.

Edsall was in his fifth season at Maryland and had a 22-34 (10-24 ACC/Big Ten) record in his four-plus seasons.

“Having spent more than a decade with the Maryland football program over the course of his career, I feel Mike is best suited to effectively guide our program through the remainder of the 2015 season”, Anderson said.

I’m sure Kevin Anderson believed Edsall’s success in taking a Division I-AA school and making them a Division I-A contender in the BCS would continue in College Park. “So we’ll take all of that and we’ll bring forth a great football coach”.

“It’s very important that we have all three aspects – that we have somebody who’s going to be committed to the academic mission, to developing good men and also to winning on the field”, he said.
