Universal Open To A Female Mummy In New Series Reboot

Somehow, Universal’s “Monster Cinematic Universe” idea is still trundling along, but we could be getting something pretty interesting out of it after all: the studio are considering turning the titular mummy of the next film in this shared universe into a female star.

In both the 1932 Mummy film and its 1999 remake, the monster was a man, as he was played by Boris Karloff and Arnold Vosloo.

Considering the amount of success that Universal has had this year, this film is just the first of many that will in a few way be interconnected through their legendary monster universe.

Universal is planning on rebooting its entire monster universe and “The Mummy” is one of the first ones on the list. That casting is supposed to take place within the next couple of months, so we’ll know pretty soon if The Mummy is going to be someone’s mummy.

Per THR, Universal is resurrecting The Mummy as the kickoff to its planned monsters universe, as director Alex Kurtzman and writer Jon Spaihts prepare their remake for March 24, 2017. Other potential films revolve around Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein and vampire hunter Van Helsing. This take on the classic franchise is also unique in the respect that it’s going to be set in the present day. The franchise will continue with the studio’s Untitled Mummy Reboot, which was recently shifted from a summer 2016 to a spring 2017 release date.
