Beloved University of Texas mascot Bevo XIV has been diagnosed with bovine leukemia virus and is being retired immediately.
The executive director at the Silver Spurs, Ricky Brennes, which is the organization that handles the wellbeing of the mascot says that Bevo XIV truly is a special animal.
University officials said the search for Bevo XV will begin immediately and a new mascot could be selected by the 2016 football season. He was also around for the BCS national championship victory during the 2nd appearance at the Rose Bowl.
After beginning his tenure at age 2 in 2004, Bevo XIV was on the sidelines for many historic moments.
It’s a unusual tradition, but Longhorns fans love their Bevo.
The university had said last week had said that Bevo XIV had a life-threatening condition and he missed the Longhorns’ victory over Oklahoma on Saturday’ at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. “We all have warm memories of him as he heads in to retirement”.
For 11 years, he’s been a sideline fixture at football games and other events, including President George W. Bush’s second inauguration.

‘BEVO embodies the courage and strength of our university, and brings joy to the thousands of children, fans and alumni, and stands for the same principals of our university – winning with integrity’. John T. and Betty served as caretakers of both BEVO XIV and BEVO XII.
