Police Shoot Rampaging Bear in Eastern Russian Federation

A Russian television report has been broadcast showing a wild bear rampaging through a shopping mall in Russia’s Far east.

Surveillance video showed the frantic bear roaming the empty shopping center after it had closed for the night late October 13 in the city of Khabarovsk.

Government investigators said (in Russian) that they have now opened an inquiry, after “numerous requests” to do so, into why the animal was killed. Law enforcement officers were in pursuit of the bear and it was shot dead at the playground.

Police said they shot the animal, which became angry and disorientated from wounds received from broken glass in the shopping mall, after trapping it in a nearby kindergarten.

“While the police was forcing out the animal to the street and chasing it, they brought it to this state of being really mad with stress and fear”.

Tass, another state-run news agency, said bears were increasingly wandering into towns to seek food before they hibernate in November. No people were reported injured.
