Two dead after elderly man drives wrong way down motorway

Two men have died in a crash on the M1 reportedly involving a auto travelling the wrong way down the carriageway.

The incident, which happened at 2am this morning, happened near junction 24 of the M1.

The calamity needed a green Mazda Premacy as well as a neutral tone Ford transportation lorry of about joint 24 in Leicestershire within 2am.

The van driver was taken to Queens Medical Centre, where he is believed to be in a stable condition.

The southbound carriageway remained closed until 9.25pm, causing severe delays throughout the region in both the morning and evening rush hours.

Leicestershire Police confirmed it had received reports of a auto travelling the wrong way down the southbound carriageway of the M1 prior to the collision, reports the Daily Telegraph.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “Police investigation work and recovery is now complete and our contractors are on scene to carry out any necessary emergency repairs to the damaged road surface”.

Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
