US Capitol’s Confederate statues prompt renewed debate
“However, it is clearer and clearer to me that many of my fellow citizens feel differently and that our state flag increasingly portrays a false impression of our state to others”. But the Confederate flag, a few metres away on statehouse grounds, continued to fly high – as decreed by state law, which says it can not be moved except by two-thirds majority vote of the state legislature.

The latest research from YouGov shows that in the wake of the Charleston shootings opinion has shifted further against flying the Confederate flag in public. But our list is probably nowhere near complete.
The flags – a Confederate battle flag and three flags with different designs used by the Confederate States of America – were taken down after a verbal order from the governor “first thing this morning”, said Mr Bentley’s press secretary, Yasamie August. “People of all races in Charleston and South Carolina and around the country have come together and had sympathy for one another, [saying] we can’t allow this to happen”, Hartvigsen said.
The most innocuous interpretation of the Confederate flag is one of southern pride: of defiance during the Civil War, of tribute to the lives lost and of a shared set of distinctly southern values.
