Thousands pay respects to Athlone couple killed in Tunisia

A MEATH GAA club has paid a touching tribute to Lorna Carty, the Irish woman killed in a terror attack in Tunisia yesterday.

The Tunisian government says eight people are in custody in Tunisia, suspected of having direct links to the deadly beach attack.

Bishop of Meath Michael Smith acknowledged the widespread grief and sadness in the locality at what he called her “senseless killing”.

Irish foreign minister Charlie Flanagan admitted on Saturday that there was “grave concern for two other citizens who had been at the scene of the attacks at Sousse, Tunisia”.

Relatives and family friends say Lorna Carty was fatally shot as she sunbathed.

Twelve people have been arrested in connection with the deadly Sousse beach hotel attack on foreign tourists, accoridng to Tunisian authorities.

Meanwhile, there will be no Irish tourists travelling from Dublin to Tunisia for the remainder of the summer after two operators suspended all flights to the country.

At least 15 Britons were among the 38 people killed at a Tunisian beach resort Friday. “We have not taken this decision lightly but believe it to be in the best interests of our customers”, the spokeswoman said.

“I ran to the sea to my children and grabbed our things and, as I was running towards the hotel, the waiters and the security on the beach started shouting “Run, run, run””.

The 23-year-old gunman was an engineering student, he was later shot dead by police. According to the SITE intelligence group, the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Martina and Laurence Hayes, from Westlodge, Athlone, will repose at Flynn’s Funeral Home, The Strand, from 2pm today, before their removal to the Church of St Peter and Paul.

The Home Secretary Theresa May has said more British fatalities are expected after the “appalling” massacre.

It said on Twitter it has arranged an additional plane to depart from Tunisia to fly home anyone wishing to leave.
