An Arab stabbed an Israeli policeman at an entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday and was shot dead by security forces, police said, the latest in a wave of knife attacks.
“Police will display zero tolerance toward any instance of violence or attempt to breach the peace”, the Jerusalem district police said in a statement. The incident occurred at the Old City’s Lions Gate. The attack, which lightly wounded a police officer, was the first in the current round of violence to involve an explosive device.
On Sunday night, four Jews were attacked near a kibbutz in northern Israel by an Arab Israeli who rammed them with his auto and then lunged at them with a knife.
With random stabbings happening each day, the violence has Israelis on edge.
The suspect was identified as Mustafa Adel al-Khatib. The Gaza health ministry said four Palestinians were injured.
The Israeli government should stop the settlers’ assaults on the Palestinians in the West Bank, Abbas was quoted by WAFA as saying in a telephone conversation with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.
The wave of attacks began weeks ago in Jerusalem and has since spread across Israel, while violent protests have erupted in the West Bank and along the Gaza border – where nine Palestinians, including two children, were killed in clashes over the weekend.
In attacking Palestinians and scrawling their messianic graffiti, this youth movement from across Israel and the West Bank can be understood as a new, younger, more anti-hierarchical form of “romantic religious Zionism”, said Shlomo Fischer, a sociology professor and expert on Jewish extremism, who said that many young people’s desire to return Israel to a “purer” state is comparable to the region’s other extremist groups such as the so-called Islamic State.
The Israeli Air Force bombed two Hamas weapon manufacturing facilities in northern Gaza early Sunday in response to a rocket fired into southern Israel.
Much like the arguments heard among those who settled the Gaza Strip before the 2005 Israeli disengagement, moreover, Salomon said that his community serves as a buffer between the “Arabs” and central Israel, and therein prevents “Iran from shooting missiles” directly into the Israeli heartland.
They included a 13-year-old boy who was hit by a rubber-coated bullet in the West Bank on Sunday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. In Gaza on Sunday, Palestinians demonstrated along the Israeli border fence, throwing rocks and rolling burning tires.
Another youth chimed in: “We’ve tried negotiations and it didn’t work”. Israel considers the entire city its undivided capital.
At least 20 Palestinian students were also injured, eight by live ammunition, near the Khaddoury College, located in the West Bank city of Tulkarem.

The status quo at the Temple Mount, a holy site for Jews and Muslims, allows Jews to visit but confine obvious worship to the adjacent Western Wall while leaving the day-to-day administration of the mosque compound to a Muslim authority, the Waqf. Responding to his critics, Netanyahu guaranteed that “there are no restrictions on the actions of our security forces”. Jethro Mullen wrote from Hong Kong.
