Facebook’s On This Day feature can sidestep your worst memories

Today, Facebook is improving the nostalgia feature, “On This Day” by allowing users to filter out memories that they would rather not revisit. It reminds users that they can completely unfriend or block somebody if they’d somewhat not hear about them in any respect – since filtering them out in On This Day will exclusively silence them in that section, not within the News Feed or wherever else. Part of outcome of using the Facebook social network is the understanding that you’re feeding content into a black box, controlled by a mysterious and proprietary software algorithms the user has no control over and is not allowed to understand.

Facebook of course won’t admit that this is what the filters are for. If there’s a person you want to filter out, click Edit next to people. On one hand, it’s really nice to go on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

“Everyone has various kinds of memories that can be surfaced – good, bad and everything in between”, Facebook said in a statement. “After it launched, we heard feedback that people wanted more control over the memories they see”. Or, if you are depressed by all of your social networking past, you can simply disable notifications for “On This Day” altogether.

Users have reported that the bug has infected only the mobile site of Facebook and not on the desktop version and mobile apps.

Set up filters by visiting the “On This Day” page and clicking “Preferences” in the top right. Here we show you how to stop Facebook bringing up painful memories of the past – plus: how to hide photos of your ex. Also see: Best Facebook tips & tricks.

These unwanted memories will include posts, photos, statuses where you were tagged in, life events, the dates when you became friends with someone (and then later on unfriended).
