The company’s brilliant app only strategy, to offer Big Billion Day discounts, seems to be paying off. The Flipkart app has climbed up the charts to become the No 2 app on Google’s Play Store and topped the charts on iOS as well.
“This sets a record for the highest number of mobile phones sold in India in a short period of ten hours in any platform, either online or offline”, Flipkart said in a statement.
It added that the 75 per cent of the phones sold during this period were 4G-enabled. Flipkart’s rival Snapdeal, which had its Electronics Monday sale a day prior to Big Billion, said that it saw massive sales across segments, but that its smartphones sales got the best response.
Apart from Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai led in terms of the volumes, while the second-tier cities like Nagpur, Indore, Coimbatore, Vishakhapatnam and Jaipur joined the lead in mobile phone sales online. The sale of mobile phones started at midnight Wednesday, 14th October. “We have had 1.6 million app installs in the last two days”, Mukesh Bansal, head of e-commerce platform, Flipkart said.
Currently, one in five mobile phones are sold on Flipkart and in October, one out of every four phones will be sold on Flipkart, he said.
Flipkart provides more than 30 million items across over 70 groups, including press publications, electronic devices and lifestyle.
