Samsung Galaxy S7 Rumors: Upcoming Handset to Feature ClearForce Touch?

Samsung’s smartphone sales and market share have been tumbling over the past couple of years, pushed especially hard by Chinese vendors such as Huawei and Xiaomi in the low-end to midrange markets. Lackluster sales for the quarter ended June 30 contributed to Samsung’s seventh straight drop in quarterly earnings. It shows that worldwide smartphone shipments for the period grew by 9.1% over the previous quarter and total 332 million units. Also, approximately 10 million units of the newly launched flagship device, Note 5, will be shipped by the end of this year.

Wu added: “Huawei is the first Chinese smartphone brand to reach 100 million in annual shipment volume, but it is unlikely to be the only Chinese vendor to arrive at this threshold this year”.

Even with the slippage, Samsung is clinging to the top spot among smartphone makers.

Despite the anticipated overall slip, Samsung remained a strong competitor in the third quarter, accounting for around 25 percent of all global shipments. That stake, though, was down from 26.7 percent in the second quarter. Then the first numbers began to roll in from South Korean and it was reported that Apple had been the first foreign OEM to ever go beyond 20% market share. That’s a 16.3% increase quarter-over-quarter.

Their contract will allow Samsung to tap Synaptics technology on upcoming handsets to allow its smartphones’ displays to respond to a number of screen pressure levels, similar to the iPhone 6s’ 3D Touch.

The smartphone market is set to grow by just 9.3 percent in 2015, down from 26.5 percent in 2014, and it is predicted to slow down further to 7.7 percent in 2016.

“Emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and India are now the major battlegrounds for vendors as developed markets have become fairly saturated”, TrendForce wrote of the impending slowdown.

TrendForce noted that numerous OEMs unveiled their next-generation flagship devices ahead of the iPhone 6s announcement in September, including Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5, Huawei’s Mate S and Sony Z5 series.
