Addressing the press conference on Thursday here, Congress leader Anand Sharma condemned Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s remark over writer’s protest saying that his statement is perverse.

“Subsequent to this incident, a series of writers have returned awards conferred on them by the Sahitya Academy”.

While expressing disinclination to question either the academic credentials of the protesting writers or their right to have their own political prejudices, Jaitley suggested their activism was prompted by the decline of Congress and Left, and they had been forced to manufacture a controversy themselves.

Finance MinisterArun Jaitley today said economic growth could top 7.5 per cent in the current fiscal and macro economic indicators are positive with declining inflation and twin deficits under control. It says that without his decisions and stewardship of India’s financial direction, India would not have achieved what it has.

The party alleged that it showed that the Narendra Modi dispensation was “insincere, insensitive and unconcerned” to what is happening in the country.

Attacks on the Modi Government started soon after it came into power, Jaitley said, adding that “media reports were carried out that there were a series of attacks against the Christian community including attacks on churches”. “The manufactured revolt is a case of an ideological intolerance towards the BJP”.

Stating that there is no atmosphere of intolerance in the country, the minister asked how many of these writers protested during the Emergency or against the 1984 Sikh killings.
