Palm-sized Sony RX1R II camera coming in December

Sony has released a new sibling camera to its RX1R and RX1, this one being called the RX1R II, which is a full-frame compact camera that essentially improves on the weaknesses of its predecessors.

This diminutive device is smaller than a DSLR body.

However, the feature that separates the RX1R II from all cameras is its optical variable low-pass filter-a first of its kind-allowing photographers to “manually adjust the balance of image resolution and presence of moiré or colour artifacts to match the subject”. It is also believed to be the widest coverage on a full-frame sensor out in the market.

Sony has paired its 35mm fixed-focal size F2 ZEISS Sonnar T* lens with the RX1R II’s back-illuminated full-body, 35mm Exmor R CMOS sensor.

Other specs and features of the RX1R II include uncompressed 14-bit RAW, full HD video recording at 60/30/24fps, and Wi-Fi/NFC wireless connectivity.

If you need to share your shots right now, the RX1R II also comes equipped with NFC and WiFi.

The camera’s sensor features 399 focal-plane phase-detection AF points that cover about 45% of the image area and work with 25 contrast AF points to achieve focus response that is about 30% faster than the original model.

Sony cameras are being used as benchmark in the recent years. pocketable shooters that deliver bigger sensors, brighter lenses, and better image quality than similarly sized models are just a few of the reasons why Sony has been treated as gold standard. Sony says the camera is designed with traditional photography in mind, although you can shoot movies if you want to (although Sony didn’t show off any videos shot with the camera, so quality remains to be seen). The back-illuminated sensor structure also allows for tracking while shooting at the top continuous shooting rate of 5 fps. This pop-up 2,359,296 dot EVF is similar to that which was introduced by the RX100 III, but is bigger, and moves up or down with a simple one-push operation. The LCD display can tilt upward up to 109 degrees and downward up to 41 degrees, which gives a greater range of shooting angles and positions.

Despite packing all of this tech, the RX1R II only measures 113 x 65 x 72 mm (4.4 x 2.6 x 2.8 in) and weighs 507 g (17.8 oz) when loaded with a battery and memory card.

If this sounds like a camera to put on your holiday shopping list, it won’t come cheap: The RX1R II will hit shelves this November for $3,300.
