“This is bad for people and bad for marketers”, the blog post explained.

The monetization of social media is now fully upon us. Facebook said businesses could choose whether to have this section link to their own retail websites, or allow people to buy directly from their Facebook Pages.

This feature goes hand-in-hand with another new addition called Shop, which can be found under Favorites, according to Engadget.

Emma Rodgers, Facebook head of product marketing for commerce, explains that the portal’s aim is to give consumers easier methods to find products on mobile phones, improve the online shopping experience and help companies that advertise in Facebook boost their sales, reports The Washington Post. Neither EconoTimes nor its third party suppliers shall be liable for any errors, omissions or delays in content, or for any actions taken in reliance thereon. Facebook, used by users for interacting with their friends and family, is testing a few new ways to shop in its app. Facebook said other tests include a new way for users to continue watching a video in a pop-up window while they’re doing other things on the social network. We’re testing with a limited set of small businesses in the U.S. who are also testing the Shop section on Pages.

According to Facebook, the new feature resulted in 30-50% decline in cost-per conversion for ads using the carousel format. Most iPhone users now have the feature and Facebook is testing ads on it. “We are also starting to test this on the web, and plan to test on Android phones in the coming months”, Cathcart said. But once clicked, the user can scroll through the images, text and videos in full screen and even browse through the products before navigating to the retailers’ website. Also, the social networking giant is expected to attract huge ad dollars and generate more revenue. Let’s see how this Shopping feature will stack up against Twitter’s Buy button or YouTube’s shopping ads.

Another new feature is a new immersive advertising unit that allows retailers to showcase catalogs of their products inside Facebook, not sending users to a mobile site instead.
