BMW officially announces the long awaited M2
It has a more powerful turbocharged 3-liter six-cylinder engine, is rear-wheel drive and has a lightweight aluminum suspension.

The M2 can hit the 100 km/h mark in just 4.3 seconds with the M DCT since it shift faster than any human ever could and also has a Launch Control feature. Those are virtually Porsche numbers! Ever since the 2 Series was introduced two years ago, a high-performance M2 was rumoured to be in the works, and German automaker has finally pulled announced its arrival. And to get you in to drift mode, the M2’s Dynamic Stability Control system comes with M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which when activated allows wheel slip and therefore moderate, controlled drifts on the track.
Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, but if you option the M Driver’s Package (which, in Europe at least, includes a track training course), top speed is lifted to 270km/h. Sensors including those of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system determine the car’s steering angle, accelerator position, brake pressure, engine torque, wheel speed and yaw rate. Combined mileage is 33.2MPG. As with the larger M4, a GoPro camera app is also available, pairing the camera with the car’s dash display and iDrive controller. A glance at the front end reveals characteristic M design features.
But the use of EPS is often less about performance than efficiency, and BMW tells us the M2’s steering assist requires no electricity when the auto is travelling in a straight line, reducing drag on the electrical system, and consequently, cutting fuel consumption. Top speed stands at 250 km/h (155 mph).
It’s been only a couple of years since BMW discontinued the 1M, but we’ve been craving for another smaller M-powered vehicle since. The design of the interior comes with the trademark M embossing and an M gearshift.
Although the outside clearly shows the M2 is a member of the M family, there are few surprises on the inside.
Compared with the regular 2 Series, it’s squatter, with bulging wheel arches, phat-with-a-ph tyres and quad pipes, while the front sports massive air intakes that’ll leave drivers quaking in their boots once they spot it in the rear-view mirror.
Sports seats, in black Dakota leather with blue contrast stitching and an M logo in the backrests, have adjustable side bolsters to give the driver and front passenger optimum support through fast corners. Buyers can either choose from a standard 6-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
