Universal’s new ‘Mummy’ movie might feature female monster
But rather than simply rehashing the age-old tale, The Mummy reboot is actually thinking about making a pretty big change by making its titular character a woman, with her very own original backstory. As Universal pumps new life into a planned series of monster-movies, the old bandage-swaddled Mummy might look a little different upon resurrection…
Considering the amount of success that Universal has had this year, this film is just the first of many that will in a few way be interconnected through their legendary monster universe.
The final decision will allegedly come based finding the right actor to be the mummy-but hey, even if it ends up being a male actor, at least Universal seem open to adding a bit of gender diversity to its monster films. That roster includes Dracula, Frankenstein (and his monster), The Invisible Man, Van Helsing and others. Director Alex Kurtzman and writer Jon Spaihts have two unique scripts for both a male and female protagonist. The franchise will continue with the studio’s Untitled Mummy Reboot, which was recently shifted from a summer 2016 to a spring 2017 release date.
