Steve Spurrier to retire from South Carolina immediately

Steve Spurrier’s part of that elite group. It’s time for South Carolina to start rebuilding.

“Today was one of the smoothest practices we’ve had in awhile”, added Matulis.

While Spurrier said he was resigning, not retiring, at a Tuesday news conference, he said he doubted he would be a college head coach again.

With a record of 86-49-0, Spurrier goes out as South Carolina’s most successful coach.

After two losing seasons with the Washington Redskins, he returned to the SEC with South Carolina and turned the perennially mediocre Gamecocks into championship contenders. Spurrier, 70, is in his 11th season as the Gamecocks’ head coach.

Spurrier said it’s time to let another coach take over. He said he was a recruiting liability, according to the Associated Press.

“Our team is not in shambles, as a few might say”, Elliott told reporters.

“Why’s everyone all dressed up?” “This isn’t a funeral”.

Reactions from ESPN staff writer Brett McMurphy about South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier’s sudden resignation.

Music blared over loudspeakers while players worked out.

Elliott, a Camden native, was hired in 2010 to be the team’s offensive line and running game coach. “Somehow or the other we’ve slid and it’s my fault”. “Not sure the change is what they’ve needed but the change is what they’ve got”.

Spurrier said he is remaining in town and looks forward to watching the Gamecocks under Elliott’s leadership.

“When something is inevitable, you do it right then”, Spurrier said.

Spurrier was praised by his former athletics director, Eric Hyman – who is now in the same position at Texas A&M.

Elliott the football coach isn’t the first in his sport to share a name with a famous Spurs player.

“It’s sad”, echoed senior offensive guard Mike Matulis.

Spurrier, in the middle of his 11th season at South Carolina, did not return messages seeking comment. Spurrier has more wins than any coach at South Carolina. In 1996, he became the first Heisman Trophy victor to coach another Heisman Trophy victor with Danny Wuerffel at Florida.

Mason lost his only meeting with Spurrier.

But things have quickly spiraled downward this season.

With the loss of quarterback Connor Shaw and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, the Gamecocks struggled to a 6-6 record in 2014 but ended the season on a high note with the school’s fourth consecutive bowl win.

And he couldn’t just sit back and let his play-calling do the talking.

“He’s not a quitter at all”.

“You are going to miss probably one of the most unique personalities in the game, ever”, Foley said. I got to play against him.
