Union City officials and work crews remain at the scene of the sinkhole Alvarado Boulevard and New Haven Street, which was initially reported by a passerby just before 2 p.m.
The hole spread from about 10 to 12 feet wide Wednesday to about 20 feet Thursday morning. “Now, it could fit about four SUVs”.
KTVU-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1X5pKHY ) the roughly 12- by 10-foot sinkhole at the intersection of Alvarado Boulevard and New Haven Street was first reported Wednesday afternoon.
The intersection remains closed this morning as work crews dig out the street using an excavator.
Crews will pause evaluations Wednesday night and resume Thursday, Sugayan said.
It has caused no injuries or damage, according to Union City Police Detective Brian Baumgartner.
The agencies have not yet figured out the cause of the sinkhole, she said.
Crews have removed pieces of asphalt and other road debris from the area, and stabilized the hole by installing sheet panel in it, she said. A Union City police officer helped direct traffic, but besides the early start, people said this looked and felt like a normal day around the campuses.
The deteriorating roadway is near Alvarado Middle School, a fire station, Holly Community Center and Alvarado Elementary School.

Parents of students at Alvarado Middle School should make alternate pickup and drop-off plans, and consult with New Haven Unified School officials for impacts on school transportation, Sugayan said.
