The KNVB did approach the former Feyenoord boss as part of a plan that would start Koeman as Guus Hiddink’s assistant manager and step into his role after Euro 2016, much like Danny Blind has done.
He now faces a race to be fit for Ireland’s Euro 2016 playoff in November.
Koeman, 52, took charge of Southampton ahead of the 2014-2015 campaign, guiding his team to seventh place in the Premier League last term.
