Whether it’s inexperience, risky behavior or other factors, teen drivers tend to a have higher crash rate than drivers in other age groups. Tragically, according to the NHTSA, motor vehicle crashes are the leading causes of death for 14-18 year olds in the United States. “One effective tool to help keep teens safe is a parent-teen driving agreement to detail driving privileges, rules and consequences”. The event will be from 2 to 5 p.m. October 17 at Lively Pointe Youth Center, 909 N. O’Connor. Nunez launched the Dnt txt n drV Foundation in 2014 and is a passionate advocate for distracted driving prevention, making numerous appearances at high schools throughout his racing schedule and speaking at a few of the nation’s most important driving safety forums since the age of 15. New drivers are especially vulnerable to these distractions and they are also generally less knowledgeable about aspects such as tire safety. NHTSA’s website, www.safercar.gov/parents, has detailed information and statistics about the five rules created to help save the lives of teen drivers.

“Graduated Driver License programs are responsible for decreasing fatal and injury crashes among teen drivers, but parental involvement is key in keeping teen drivers safe”, said Stephanie Milani, Tennessee Public Affairs Specialist, AAA – The Auto Club Group.
Tire pressure: Drivers are advised to check their tire pressure when tires are cool-at least three hours after the last time a vehicle has been driven-and to be sure they know the proper tire pressure for their vehicle. In 2013, 156 people were killed in crashes that involved a distracted teen driver.
“Our officers tell us one of the most stressful parts of their job is when they have to tell the parents of a teen that their child was killed in an automobile crash”. This youth-led approach-involving teens in peer-to-peer education-is thought to be most effective at preventing injury and saving lives. During Phase Two, teens can not operate a motor vehicle with more than one passenger who is younger than 21 years old, unless the additional passengers are family members. These grants are specifically earmarked to support school sponsored safe driving activities. Now the survey results of the yet-to-be released 2015 Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI) reveals that while teens intellectually acknowledge the dangers of distracted driving, including texting or talking on a hand-held phone, habitually they still do it anyway.
