McLellan was picked by North America general managers Peter Chiarelli, his boss in Edmonton, and Stan Bowman of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Team North America is being run by the NHL, Hockey Canada, USA Hockey and the NHL Players’ Association.

The World Cup will be held from September 17 to October 1 in Toronto.

The longtime San Jose Sharks coach is getting a taste of coaching a young group with McDavid and the Oilers this season. The Sharks during that time made six playoff appearances, winning three Pacific Division titles.

Fenton is in his 18th season with the Nashville Predators, and his 10th as the club’s assistant general manager.

Last month, NHL.com projected that two of their star youngsters – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid – would make the team, while defensemen Griffin Reinhart and Darnell Nurse are also eligible for selection.

The World Cup of Hockey’s most unique team now has its coach.

Oh, and just to continue with the Edmonton theme from above, the Oilers link to Team North America extends beyond coaching and management. All games will be televised by ESPN in the United States and Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada.
