Violence escalates as Palestinians torch Jewish holy site at West Bank

The blame game is in full swing – Israeli officials accuse Hamas of escalating the situation while Hamas leaders who control Gaza say Israel is fanning the flames. “It is not being organized or called for by big political parties”.

The United Nations Security Council is set to meet Friday over the unrest. The current crisis can not be resolved by security measures alone, Zerihoun warned.

“We will find and arrest those who set the fire”, the military said in a statement.

He also blamed “the apparent heavy-handed approach by Israeli security services” and “the impact of social media” for the escalation. The violence is the direct result of Israeli violence that goes unpunished, the continued theft of Palestinian lands and the refusal of Israelis to recognize the rights of Palestinians and sovereignty to Palestine.

Despite the PA’s arrest campaign and efforts to block protests, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Abbas of “incitement”.

Protests have given way to clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in areas across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip as at least four Palestinians were killed and dozens others injured while marking a “Day of Rage”, which was called for by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. However, he has also told his security forces not to stop Palestinian stone-throwers heading to confrontations with Israeli troops. The soldier was stabbed in the back and chest, an Israeli hospital official said.

In the meantime, Israel has forged ahead with the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which cut crisscrossing furrows through Palestinian territory.

The incident occurred as Israeli troops clashed with Palestinian stone-throwers following Friday prayers in the West Bank city of Hebron. The soldier was evacuated for emergency medical care.

The FPA has complained in the past of harassment of a few of its members by both Israeli and Palestinian forces, including cases in which reporters were beaten and equipment smashed.

Since the occupation began, an unwritten rule has said that Jews would not pray at the Temple Mount, one of the holiest sites in Islam and the holiest site in Judaism.

The Israelis were killed in random attacks in the street or on buses.
