An Indian woman who was split from her family as a 11 year-old child will be returning home after spending more than 13 years in Pakistan.

Says Jainandan Mahato and Balram Mahato (brother) of Geeta/Heera that they are very much pleased to the people in Pakistan, who not only saved Geeta/Heera but also did a great deed by providing shelter and everything to live with honor. Unable to explain who she was or where she had come from, the Rangers had given her into the care of Edhi Foundation in Lahore. “But this week she recognised a family as her’s”, Edhi said.

The government has dug out a rarely applied clause in the Indian Citizenship Act to make way for granting Indian national status to Geeta, the hearing and speech impaired girl stuck in Pakistan since 2003.

Darvesh Kumar Yadav, SHO of Kanaria police outpost said that they are doing their best to assist the family, most of whom live in Punjab now while a few are in Delhi.

“A lot of debate ensued on Geeta’s citizenship status and we decided that for anyone to enter India, one needs to have supporting travel documents like a passport”.

Kazmi said Bilqees Edhi, wife of Edhi Foundation founder Abdul Satter Edhi, hoped to accompany Geeta along with several other members of the Edhi family to India before the end of October.
