Interceptions, Derrick Henry runs spark Alabama’s rout of Texas A&M

The Aggies are 2-0 in the division behind 3-0 LSU. The Aggies rank one spot ahead of the Tide and have proven themselves a much different team than the one that got shut out past year.

The key match up today will be the Aggies high powered offense against Alabama’s defense. The Crimson Tide have a home loss to Ole Miss 43-37.

Now, naturally, Alabama, now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, nearly couldn’t resist the urge to make it a little scary.

Alabama is the 4-point favorite so far; the OVER / UNDER total is at 52.5 now. That series ended with a 32-yard field goal from Adam Griffith to add to Alabama’s lead. The senior leader captained a defense that limited Arkansas to 220 yards in a 27-14 win. You can get a line on the Eagles’ embattled Chip Kelly, Boise State’s Brian Harsin, Tom Herman, the new head coach at Houston and the greatly missed former offensive coordinator at sputtering Ohio State, Justin Fuente of Memphis… the list goes on. They beat Mississippi State 30-17 two weeks ago and were bye last week, and have already taken down two Top 25 teams this year.

Both Texas A&M and Alabama will come into Saturday’s game ranked inside the top 10. Take the Aggies plus the points +4.

Texas A&M won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Aggies could only manage 2 second half field goals but it was enough to hold off the Bulldogs.

The way the Pac-12 and college football landscape are setting up, it’d be hard to keep a one-loss Stanford out of the College Football Playoff.

One of the positives for Alabama special teams-wise? The difference is Alabama is better at nearly every position.

Alabama’s defense is once again putting up strong numbers but I still feel like the secondary is the weak link. With each passing week, though, Hill seemed to regress, gradually becoming less decisive and more turnover-prone, until the Crimson Tide ground the offense to a halt. He has the experience of playing the end of the season last year and 5 games into this year but having the full Alabama experience was one game he was missing.

The Crimson Tide received another defense score when safety Eddie Jackson returned an interception 93 yards to increase the lead to 28-6. Allen threw an interception in the season opener, but has tossed just one pick in the last four games combined. Cooper Bateman has thrown for 244 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions. Alabama is 72-4 since the 2008 season when rushing for 140 or more yards. O.J. Howard has 16 catches for 200 yards. Raheem Falkins is questionable.

Well, at least half the passes to Texas A&M receivers.

Conversely, as noted earlier, A&M is rather good at rushing ball-passers.

Florida and Arkansas are looking to star players to help earn victories against in-conference opponents as the SEC heats up. On second-and-1, Henry broke through the hole at the line of scrimmage and past the defense, taking the ball 55 yards into the end zone.

– Fitzpatrick, a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth. Brice Dolezal has 20 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Coker picked up a couple of first downs with his arm, finding freshman wide receiver Calvin Ridley for 13 yards and Mullaney for 11, but the drive stalled just shy of midfield and sophomore punter J.K. Scott was brought on to punt the ball away. I jumped up and I’m kind of a hyper guy anyway, and I’m jumping up and down and I turned and Coach Bryant is standing like three yards from me on the sideline, and he looked like he was eight-foot tall. He is questionable for undisclosed reasons.

Statistically, these two teams are evenly matched. “Those first three years were tough when I went back there when Jackie Sherrill took over”, Hallman said. Those factors combine to give the Aggies the FPI edge (56 percent chance to win). I like the Crimson Tide to win a close low scoring game.
