Dole recalls a few spinach after salmonella found in sample

The product code and enjoy-by-date are in the upper right hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode. The company is recalling eight-ounce bags of the spinach distributed in Ohio and a dozen other states.
Dole is now reaching out to stores to make sure they pull the product from grocery shelves. Only those with the specific codes and labels are affected in the voluntary recall.
In a press release, Dole said that no illnesses were reported as of Wednesday night.
The recalled product yielded positive results for Salmonella after it was tested by an FDA contract lab. It can be identified by its batch number (1404D25), its UPC code (4007413813), and its “best before” date (5/24/2015).
Salmonella is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or abnormal pain. Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are reportedly most susceptible to becoming ill due to salmonella exposure.

Although many people can recover without treatment, about 450 people die annually from salmonella-related illnesses, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates.
