Kangaroo Returned To Owner After Hopping Loose On Staten Island

It’s not everyday you see a kangaroo wandering the streets of Staten Island.

Kangaroos are not allowed to be kept as pets in Straten Island, but are allowed in the upstate New York community where the owner apparently lives, so police didn’t press charges.

The 4-foot jumping joey, named Buster, was in a rear yard with a 6-foot fence but managed to open the door, a police source said.

At first he thought it was a deer – occasionally small deer make their way to his shop, which straddles the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge – but then Buster stood up. When it came closer, we saw it was a kangaroo.

The kangaroo was on the loose for around 15 minutes before being captured.

According to the Daily News, Buster and his owner, who live upstate, were visiting a friend’s house when he escaped from the back yard.

At the time Mr Schirripa told authorities that he had a permit for a petting zoo, but the Health Department told The Post that no license had been issued.

Police on Staten Island found themselves responding to an unusual call Saturday morning: an escaped kangaroo. Since the man was planning to return home Thursday, they did not issue a violation.
