Crews spent Friday pouring concrete to support an 18-inch water pipe.

The giant gap in the pavement at Alvarado Boulevard and New Haven Street grew from 6 feet by 8 feet when it was first reported at noon Wednesday to 25 feet by 25 feet wide and 10 feet deep by Thursday afternoon.

Crews from the Alameda County Water District, which supplies water to about 340,000 Tri-City residents, repaired the main and restored service to customers by 11 a.m. Thursday, district spokeswoman Sharene Gonzales said.

The road closure is located on the westbound lane of Alvarado Boulevard between Fair Ranch Road and New Haven Street.

But officials aim to find out the cause after the water district completes testing on the new pipeline and makes room for the Union Sanitary District, a Union City-based agency that treats wastewater for Tri-City-area customers. The weight of the collapsing asphalt eventually damaged a 16 inch water main buried underground, creating a huge leak and adding to the size of the hole. Police warned people to stay away from the intersection of Alvarado Boulevard and New Haven Street just before 2 p.m. after the hole was spotted by a passerby.

While fire service hasn’t been interrupted, it has inconvenienced this couple who drop off their children at a nearby school.
