“Six hours of sleep is way more important than one putt, I think”, Varner said.

Rory McIlroy believes he took a positive step forward with a four-under-par 68 in the first round of the Frys.com Open.

“Would have put me out of my misery, to be honest with you, ” he said, laughing.

Ten players are now within two shots of the lead, including world No. 7 Justin Rose.

In doing so he held a two-shot lead over a chasing pack featuring Steele’s fellow American Will Wilcox and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas who were among four players tied on nine under after their respective rounds of 67 and 71.

He couldn’t get up-and-down from a bunker on the par-5 16th.

“I’m looking at the three tournaments I’ve got coming up, which are important to me because I want to try to win the Race to Dubai again”.

McIlroy isn’t going to come out and say it in so many words, but he is only here because of the agreement with Commissioner Finchem. The golf course is in flawless shape, just the right amount of bounce on the greens.

Today’s final round at the Oceanico Victoria course will also start earlier then scheduled because of weather.

Sullivan, the South African Open victor this year, had an 18-under 195 total at Oceanico Victoria.

Defending champ shares lead •SAN ANTONIO – Defending champion Michael Allen shot a 3-under 69 for a share of the lead with Scott McCarron in the Champions Tour’s San Antonio Championship.

She tied for second last week in the LPGA Malaysia after winning her previous two starts in Canada and France, where she became the youngest major champion. Young players with partial status are in the field to get a jump on FedEx Cup points before the season hits the meat of the schedule – and events that they are crowded out of by the full-status players who were able to relax for a few weeks over the winter after the Tour Championship.

And in return for being granted a release to play in Turkey – where Rose won 1.5million United States dollars for beating Lee Westwood in the final – all eight players had to agree to make the trip to Napa Valley at least once during the next three years.

Fred Couples was a stroke back along with Bernhard Langer, Scott Dunlap and first-round leader Wes Short Jr.

Worse yet for McIlroy, the world’s No. 3 player, he almost got clocked in the head by one of those unlikely contenders, 23-year-old Argentinian rookie Emiliano Grillo, while standing on the 17th green. Couples won the 2011 event, shooting 62-62-66 for a seven-stroke victory. He has a 39-point lead over Jeff Maggert with three events left in the season-long competition.
