Three children among new refugee deaths

Twelve migrants drowned when their boat sank off the Turkish coast as they were seeking to reach Greece, while around 25 others were rescued, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic urged European leaders to support Turkey in dealing with refugees and migrants, design a common EU asylum policy and strengthen Frontex, the European border agency. Thirty-one others, thought to be mainly Syrian and Afghan, were rescued.

According to Greece s port police, the migrant boat had apparently been attempting to flee the coastguard vessel. More than 3,000 people have perished.

According to the latest figures released by the worldwide Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 300 refugees have died in the Aegean Sea so far this year while making a journey to the European continent. Despite deteriorating weather conditions, the flow of migrants and refugees arriving at the main entry points continues to average more than 4500 a day.
