West Nile virus is on the rise along with temperatures in Sacramento County, according to mosquito-abatement experts.
“The more common one is West Nile Virus“, she said.
North Texas now has its first confirmed human case of West Nile virus this summer.
Surges in mosquito populations in addition to raising concerns about annoying, itchy bites, have also raised concerns regarding West Nile virus.
Mosquitoes also can manage to breed inside PVC pipe that’s attached to downspouts in an effort to drain water away from the house, the owner of Ben Morgenstern LLC/ohiogutterman.com added. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV will have no symptoms.
Richland Public Health reported Monday a testing sample of a mosquito pool showed the virus was present.
In addition, the department notes that mosquitoes carrying the virus usually bite at dawn and dusk and recommended limiting outdoor activities during those times. But so far health officials have not seen anyone infected. To track the virus in the Pacific Northwest or get additional information, view the BFHD West Nile website at www.bfhd.wa.gov/wnv. Most people will not manifest symptoms though, with just 1 out of 5 developing fevers with joint pains, rashes, diarrhea, vomiting, body aches and headaches. Approved mosquito repellents have ingredients that include DEET, picaridin, PMD, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. The most severe type of West Nile Virus is sometimes called “neuroinvasive disease” because it affects a person’s nervous system.
In the case of Iowa as well, there has been no reported case. Symptoms of this type of illness might include high fever, disorientation, neck stiffness, tremors, seizures, paralysis, and coma; those with certain medical conditions (cancer, hypertension, kidney disease) and the elderly are at a higher risk.
