Parts of the Kashmir Valley erupted Sunday after 23-year-old Zahid Rasool Butt, part of the crew of a Kashmir-bound truck who was attacked and seriously injured by alleged Sangh Parivar activists along the Jammu-Srinagar highway during the beef row earlier this month, died at New Delhi’s Safdarjang Hospital.
Ahmad had sustained 70 percent burn injuries and was being treated at Safderjung hospital in Delhi. The locals in valley were outraged on hearing the news of his death and staged a demonstration to mark their protest. Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani termed the killing of Zahid as a “murder”. “I have no words to condemn the dastardly act which consumed the life of a poor and innocent young boy for no fault of his”, he said.
Former chief minister Omar Abdullah today pointed a finger at the ruling People’s Democratic Party’s coalition partner.
Zahid and Showkat were injured in the incident.
Brother-in-law Maulvi Mohammed Ashraf said, “Zahid was admitted in ICU, but after two days shifted to the general ward”. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning.
The NC leader also hit out at the Mufti Sayeed government saying, “And to think that all the state Govt could do was to throw 10,000 rupees at #Zahid & wash it’s hands off the whole thing #BeefMurder”.
Teargas shells and lathicharge was used to disperse them.
Bhat breathed his last on Sunday. Udhampur police have arrested nine men.
They have been also booked under section 307/336/436/147/148/120- B/427 RPC and 3/5 of Explosives Substances Act.
