The British singer has been given a doctorate by University Campus Suffolk (UCS), Ed’s hometown university, to thank him for his contribution to music.
Sheeran, who grew up in the nearby town Framlingham, accepted in person, rocking traditional graduation garb and throwing up a celebratory Instagram post.

The award-winning pop star, who left school at 16 to pursue his music career, will be given the degree by the University of Suffolk. “I definitely found it at school”, he recalled. I know that’s a weird thing to say coming to receive a doctorate but I think there’s a lot of pressure on kids to go to university, then a lot of them end up in debt with a degree they didn’t really need to get the job they want.
“Do your own shows, work up your confidence, write as many songs as possible so each time you do a song it gets better and better and better”. He said that young people should focus less on getting a higher education and more on travelling and “chilling”.
“I don’t necessarily think university is what you have to do to get a job”, Ed said.
“I’ve had an awesome year… and this makes it even better”, he said. Do you think it’s a unusual privilege for someone who doesn’t think university is necessary?
More than 1,200 UCS students will be honoured with degrees at ceremonies in Ipswich this week.

Others due to receive honorary awards this week from UCS include author of Akenfield Ronald Blythe, former competitive ice dancer, bronze medallist and former Dancing on Ice judge Nicky Slater and Maureen Reynel, MBE, of Suffolk charity, FIND, a Christian-based charity providing emergency assistance to families or individuals affected by poverty or dispossession.
